Angela Basset Evelyn is a well-known American actress, producer, and director. She is known for portraying powerful and knowledgeable African-American women. She has been performing since the 1980s and is currently one of Hollywood’s highest-paid African-American actors.

Bassett attended Jordan Park Elementary School, and after graduation, she was bused out of her neighborhood to Disston Middle School for seventh grade, which was in 1970, a year before busing was mandated to integrate St. Petersburg public schools. Bassett was bused to Azalea Middle School for eighth and ninth grades after seventh grade.

She was a part of the Boca Ciega High School cheerleading team, the Upward Bound college prep program, the debate team, the student government, the drama club, and the choir. While in high school, Bassett became the school’s first African-American to be inducted into the National Honor Society. She participated in Upward Bound, a poor students’ educational and cultural enrichment program.

She furthered her education at Yale University, where she earned a B.A. in African-American studies and graduated in 1980. She received her M.F.A. from the Yale School of Drama three years later. Her alma institution, Yale University, bestowed an honorary D.F.A. degree on her in 2018.

Her mother, Betty Jane (née Gilbert), was a civil servant and a social worker, while her father, Daniel Benjamin Bassett, was the son of a preacher. Her mother fell pregnant with her second child, Bassett’s sister D’nette, ten months after the actress was born. Bassett was taken to her paternal aunt, Golden, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, due to the stress of the pregnancy and having a newborn around.

Bassett’s parents split when she was four years old, and she was picked up from her aunt’s house by her mother and transported to St. Petersburg, Florida, with her sister. She had not seen her father in many years after the divorce until she attended her grandmother’s funeral. Bassett met her father’s daughter there; her step-sister from his first marriage, Jean Bassett, who was twelve years her senior.

After graduating from college, Bassett worked as a picture researcher and as a receptionist for a beauty salon. After that, she started looking for acting roles in New York theaters. She made her stage debut in 1985 at Second Stage Theatre in J. E. Franklin’s Black Girl.
. She appeared in two August Wilson pieces directed by her long-time tutor Lloyd Richards at the Yale Repertory Theatre. Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (1984) and Joe Turner’s Come and Gone (1986) were two Wilson plays in which Bassett appeared. She relocated to Los Angeles in 1988 in search of additional acting opportunities and had early appearances in the 1989 films A Man Called Hawk and 227.

She was able to return to the Wilson canon in 2006 when she co-starred in Fences with actor Laurence Fishburne at the Pasadena Playhouse in California. After appearing in a few lesser roles, notably Reva Styles in Boyz n the Hood (1991), Bassett had her breakthrough as singer Tina Turner in the 1993 biopic What is Love Got to Do with It, for which she received an Academy Award nod for Best Actress.

She went on to play prominent roles in several films, such as Amanda Waller in Green Lantern (2011), Betty Shabazz in Malcolm X (1992) and Panther (1995), Voletta Wallace in Notorious (2009), Katherine Jackson in The Jacksons: An American Dream (1992), and Coretta Scott King in Betty & Coretta (2013). Lynne Jacobs in a few films, including London Has Fallen (2016) and Olympus Has Fallen (2013).

She was cast as Queen Ramonda, the main character’s mother, in the popular Marvel superhero film Black Panther in February 2018, and will also appear in its future sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022), as well as Avengers: Endgame (2019).
