He commenced his career working for the PBS affiliate KBYU-TV in Provo, Utah as an associate producer and reporter in 1983, and then he worked in Salt Lake City for ABC affiliate KTVX-TV. He also worked for NBC affiliate, KRBC-TV, in Abilene in 1985 as a producer, reporter, and anchor until August 1987 when he began working as a news reporter in El Paso at KVIA-TV, an ABC affiliate station for a year. He then worked as a news reporter at KMOL-TV which is now known as WOAI-TV, an NBC affiliate station in San Antonio.

In addition, he worked as a reporter in Los Angeles, California at KABC-TV, during his time here, he reported and covered the Erik Menendez Rodney King, Lyle, and also O.J. Simpson, he also covered numerous hurricanes that have hit the Eastern seaboard and the Gulf coast, such as Katrina and Ike, the Virginia Tech campus shooting, terrorist attacks across the globe and also the U.S. Presidential elections.
