Why am I supposed to care about a Vogue cover photo of a young black basketball star and a white supermodel?
That is essentially what one of my favorite sports writers Jason Whitlock said last week about the Vogue cover that apparently has some black people upset. Whitlock said somebody is going to have to create a handbook to tell us black people when we are supposed to be angry.
I like ESPN’s Jemele Hill, too. But why is she on Lebron’s case?
We have so many more issues to be angry about: Jails full of black men. High HIV and AIDS. The economy. The race card being played in the presidential race.
I could go on and on.
A black basketball superstar and a white supermodel on the cover of Vogue is progress.
For those of you who believe it perpetuates a stereotype of black atheletes and white women. Well. so what. I can name black athletes married to black women: Dwyane Wade and Alonzo Mourning right here in South Florida.
But I really do like the way Jason Whitlock has framed it.
And go see Meet the Browns so Tyler Perry can keep making movies with black-oriented themes.
Holler back.
