BLEACHER BUMS STEP OVER THE LINE

Chicago Cubs management is promising a strict crackdown after fans in the most famous bleachers in baseball inundated Wrigley Field with half-filled beer cups, glass flasks of booze and full cans of soda. The protests came about after a bad umpire’s call last week.

“We are reviewing all of our options, including more security, stationing personnel in different places, alcohol limits and other opportunities available to us,” said Mark McGuire, the team’s executive vice president.

Meanwhile, Cubs officials are caught in a tough spot because they do not want to ruin the Wrigley Field bleachers for what they are — a great place to watch a game. Yet, they realize they must maintain some control.

“We’re caught trying to figure out the right way to do it,” McGuire said. “Unfortunately, some of [the littering] is becoming part of the tradition or culture of Wrigley Field, and it’s one we would like to lose.”

Cubs reliever Rod Beck, known for indulging from time to time, offered this opinion:

“I’m all for having a good time myself and having a few pops, but not for wasting beer by throwing it onto the field. I’d rather drink it than throw it.”
