A 12-year-old boy was in serious condition Friday after he was struck in the back of the neck during a wakeboarding accident in Deerfield Beach, officials said.
The boy had just finished his turn using the Ski Rixen machine at Quiet Waters Park, 401 S. Powerline Road, when the next boarder in the line of youngsters with him unintentionally struck him in the back of the neck, knocking him unconscious, Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue spokesman Mike Jachles said.
Lifeguards rescued the boy from the water, placed him on a backboard and made sure he could breathe, Jachles said.
Fire-rescue officials gave the boy oxygen and intravenous fluids, and took him to Broward Health Medical Center.
“He was in serious condition, but he did regain consciousness,” Jachles said. “He will recover.”
The boy was at the park as a camper in a summer program, Jachles said.
