Broward warns smoke shops of new bong law for minors

Code enforcement officials in Broward County say they plan to begin vesting stores that sell bongs and other smoking paraphernalia and warning owners against selling the devices to minors.

Several officers demonstrated to the media on Wednesday new signs that will go up inside the shops warning minors about a new law that kicked into effect on September 27.

Broward County commissioner unanimously passed the law making it illegal to sell a smoke pipe, bong, rolling papers or other smoking devices to someone under the age of 18.

Loopholes in the law allowed for the sales, even though minors cannot buy tobacco. Some of the pipes are disguised as highlighters or lipstick cases. Penalty: $250 for first offense, $500 for subsequent.
