Can You Play FF7 Remake on PS5?

Playing FF7 Remake on the PS5 is one thing Square Enix fans want for the holidays this year.

Square Enix's Final Fantasy VII Remake (FF7 Remake) has been met with wide acclaim from fans since its initial release on Apr. 10. Originally made for the PS4, players were quick to jump headfirst into reliving nostalgic memories with Cloud Strife, Tifa, Barret, and Aerith. Now, with the launch of Sony's next-generation console, the PlayStation 5 (PS5), rumors are spiraling about a possible re-release.

Can You Play FF7 Remake on PS5?

Yes, it should be possible to play the FF7 Remake on the PS5, according to Square Enix. While they haven't been very talkative about the possibility for a port to the new console, they have confirmed that FF7 will rely on backwards compatibility. That is to say that if one owns the game for PS4, they should be able to play it on the PS5 system.

There isn't a lot of concrete information about whether players will see the FF7 Remake released on the PS5. There have been rumors in both directions, but ultimately it appears to be a waiting game.

At first, it seems players had resigned themselves to simply waiting for a Final Fantasy sequel to come within the PS5 generation. The FF7 Remake seemed to be left out of the impending facelift other titles would receive under Sony: better framerates, quicker load times, and even improved graphics.

It wasn't until a now-deleted tweet by data miner Lance McDonald surfaced regarding PS5 support that fans had something to cling to. McDonald briefly mentioned that the FF7 Remake, alongside other titles, was slated to have a bit of support within the PS5 console. However, he didn't get a chance to expand fully before the tweet disappeared.

For now, it appears to be backwards compatibility or bust.
