CLASSIC DRIVES FOR DIABETES

Renee and Arven Aronin and Marilyn and Gary Studley, all of Boca Raton, have volunteered for the second year to head the planning committee for the annual Diabetes Research Institute Golf Classic on Nov. 12 at The Fountains Country Club, 4476 Fountains Drive, Lake Worth.

The event will include a luncheon, golf, reception and awards dinner.

“We want to raise as much money as we can for diabetes research,” said Marilyn Studley. “It is important for us to find a cure so that our grandchildren don’t have to suffer with the disease.”

Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the Diabetes Research Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine.

Deborah Hospital

The South Palm Beach Chapter of Deborah Hospital Foundation invites prospective members to the first meeting of the season at 11 a.m. on Sept. 20. The chapter, made up of 181 women from south Palm Beach County, meets at the South Palm Beach Civic Center on Jog Road in Delray Beach.

Regular meetings are the third Monday of the month. The September meeting date is Thursday because of the Jewish High Holy Days that week.

The foundation supports Deborah Hospital Foundation and Deborah Heart and Lung Center in Browns Mills, N.J. Now in its 79th year, the hospital is a private, nonprofit hospital and foundation specializing in the free treatment of children and adults with heart and lung diseases.

Barbara Sroka and Lea Neerin, vice presidents of the chapter’s membership committee, welcomed new members before the chapter recessed for the summer. They include Margaret Peacock, Beverly Lesser, Myrna Laudadio, Margaret Towers, Tony Aoqvavia, Selma Ross and Rene Osit.

Lynn university

The Conservatory of Music at Lynn University in Boca Raton has nominated conductor and artist faculty member Arthur Weisberg of Boca Raton to the Florida Artists Hall of Fame.

The Division of Cultural Affairs presents Hall of Fame nominees to the Florida Arts Council. The council reviews them and submits finalists to Secretary of State Katherine Harris for selection of two winners.

For several years, Weisberg has directed and conducted the Lynn University Philharmonic Orchestra. He is a well-known bassoonist, conductor, teacher, author and composer. The Lynn Conservatory of Music offers bachelors, performance and professional studies degrees. Admission is by audition only.

Genealogical Society

The Jewish Genealogical Society of Palm Beach County recently received the 2001 Outstanding Programming Award at a meeting of genealogy enthusiasts in London, England.

Sylvia Nusinov, Jewish Genealogical Society president and a resident of Boca Raton, accepted the award from the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies in July.

“Being selected as the best of the best is a distinct honor at this moment in time,” said Nusinov. “It is our 10th anniversary year.”

The club, headquartered in Delray Beach, competed with more than 80 other societies from around the world for the top honor. It won for a project held in March that included a lecture series, exhibits, posters and publications distributed to spread awareness of Jewish genealogy.

Some of the other society members attending the London meeting were Sam Nusinov of Boca Raton, and Phyllis Levine of Boca Raton.

Business women

Virginia Burgess of Boynton Beach recently was presented with the Woman of the Year Award by the Gold Coast Charter Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association.

Burgess joined the association in 1981. Since then, she has held several positions, including corresponding secretary, membership chair, board secretary, vice president and president. Most recently, she has served as a member of the chapter’s education committee.

Burgess grew up in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. She attended the University of North Carolina, Upsala College and the University of Grenoble in France. She received a master’s degree in education from Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton.

The Gold Coast Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association unites businesswomen of diverse occupations and provides opportunities to improve themselves and others personally and professionally through leadership, education, networking support and national recognition.

Elk lodge 1770

Alex Trieste, a resident of Delray Beach, was recently honored as the Elk of the Month by the Elk Lodge 1770 in Delray Beach.

Trieste is a local accountant. He was selected by lodge members for his efforts to improve the club’s accounting and computer system.

“He has really tried to help modernize our records and the way we handle our books,” said Douglas Moore, lodge president.

Trieste reviewed the club’s computer system and accounting software. Based upon his review, he made recommendations to improve the lodge’s financial operations.

“His knowledge has proven to be an invaluable asset to the lodge,” said Moore.

The award was presented at the Elks’ monthly meeting. Members who attended the meeting included Bill Petowsky, Peter Cattabriga, Dr. Harry Lehrer, John Parkinson and Karin Willoughby.
