The three Lauderdale Lakes Middle School students who were taken to hospitals Monday afternoon ingested a THC edible, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday.
Paramedics took three students to hospitals after they showed signs of possibly overdosing, according to Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue.
A woman in a 911 call released Tuesday by the Broward Sheriff’s Office told the operator that a student at the school ingested an edible with THC. The caller told the operator the student would be in the school nurse’s center. The caller did not mention the other students.
Keyla Concepción, a Broward County Public Schools spokesperson, said in an email Monday afternoon that the students were taken to hospitals as a precaution after ingesting “edibles with an unknown substance.”
A school spokesman said the incident involved three female students. Their ages were not available.
The students “possibly sustained some type of overdose from unknown substances,” said Michael Kane, battalion chief for Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue. It is not yet known what the substances were, Kane said.
The first call for help came at 10:30 a.m., and one student was taken to the hospital. The second came an hour and a half later for two more students. They were taken to Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale and Northwest Regional Hospital in Margate.
The Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday there was only one 911 call made.
“Parents and guardians are reminded to speak with their children about the importance of positive decision-making and maintaining a drug-free and healthy environment, stressing the potential risks associated with sharing unpackaged and unfamiliar food items,” Concepción said in the email.
The School District on Tuesday did not say whether the students have been disciplined. The Sheriff’s Office said their investigation is ongoing.
Monday’s incident was the latest in which multiple children were taken to hospitals due to a substance.
In an unrelated instance in October, several children were taken to hospitals after a child took a package of cannabis-infused gummy candies into the Lauderhill Boys & Girls Club after school. That student then shared it with other students. Six children were hospitalized, and two others were released to their parents. The children were between ages 6 and 8.
