Crime and Public Safety | Bicyclist killed when he was hit by a car on downtown Fort Lauderdale bridge

A bicyclist was hit and killed by a car in downtown Fort Lauderdale during the Thursday morning rush hour, police say. The driver left but returned to the scene.

About 7:30 a.m., Fort Lauderdale Police and Fire Rescue responded to the crash at 400 SW Seventh Ave., Detective Ali Adamson said in a media release. There, they found the bicyclist, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Roads were shut down and the Seventh Avenue bridge remained in the closed position to boats while traffic homicide detectives investigated the crash.

By about 11 a.m., traffic had returned to normal and the bridge had begun operating again, police said on X.

The driver was not mentioned in the release, but Adamson said they “returned to the scene.”
