Delray’s Colony Hotel donates $10K to help preserve town’s history

Continuing its owners’ tradition of giving back to the community, the Colony Hotel in Delray Beach recently donated $10,000 to the Delray Beach Historical Society.

The donation will help the historical society, founded in 1964, to continue funding its collection and preservation of information and materials from the town’s past to share with area residents and visitors.

The gift was presented by hotel owner Jestena Boughton, a third-generation Delray Beach resident whose father and grandfather bought the historic 1926 hotel in 1935.

Today, the 70-room landmark hotel at 525 E. Atlantic Ave., and its Cabana Club are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The hotel still has its original staff-operated elevator and telephone switchboard.

Every year, Boughton donates $1 from each room-night stay to charitable organizations working for causes she’s passionate about, including historic and environmental preservation.

“This gift and those we’ve received in the past are really gifts to our town and future generations who, through our exhibits and our archives, will gain a better understanding of how Delray Beach came to be what it is today,” said Leslie Callaway, the Historical Society’s president.
