DILLARD’S DORSEY CONTINUES AUBURN TRADITION

The Dillard High football pipeline to Auburn continues to flow.

Defensive tackle Charles Dorsey, a first-team Sun-Sentinel All-County and Class 5A All-State pick two years ago as a junior, orally committed Friday to the Tigers. Dorsey, 19, was too old to participate in football his senior year but continued to work out with the Panthers’ scout team.

Dorsey, 6-foot-3, 265 pounds, joins former Dillard players Frank Sanders, Calvin Jackson, Otis Mounds and Brian Robinson at Auburn. All four were starters on the unbeaten 1993 Tigers team.

“He wanted to commit to put an end to all of the recruiting pressure that he has been subjected to recently,” Dillard coach Ken Scott said. “He feels he made a good choice.”

Dorsey was recruited by more than 80 colleges and made recruiting visits to Kansas State, Michigan State, Georgia and Auburn. He had also planned to visit Florida but has canceled the trip.

Dorsey, who reportedly runs a 4.6-second, 40-yard dash, had 101 solo tackles and 84 assists as a junior.

“We thought maybe some of the interested colleges would back off on him when he was not able to play as a senior,” Scott said, “but it did not happen. Actually, more colleges became interested.”

UM lands LB Taylor

Jeffrey Taylor, an all-state linebacker from Miami Northwestern who spent last season at a prep school in Virginia, has committed to the University of Miami.

Taylor was offered a scholarship by UM last year but could not enroll because his entrance exam scores did not meet the NCAA’s minimum academic requirements.

Taylor, 6-foot-2, 220 pounds, spent 1993 at Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va., where he led the team in tackles.

At Northwestern, Taylor made his initial splash as a freshman by replacing injured senior linebacker Marvin Jones. Jones, the former FSU standout, plays for the New York Jets. As a senior in 1992, Taylor accumulated 19 sacks in six games.

The official signing date is Feb. 2. The Hurricanes are expected to sign between 12 to 20 players. UM has already received oral commitments from 10 players.
