Drivers identified in two deadly crashes with Brightline trains

The two men who died after trying to beat Brightline trains across the tracks by driving around lowered crossing gates have been identified.

The man who died in Pompano Beach on Monday is Jacob Bresnahan, 27, of Lighthouse Point, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

The man who died in Hollywood on Tuesday is 52-year-old Maher Soua, according to Hollywood police.

Bresnahan’s crash happened about 5:30 a.m. near North Dixie Highway and Northeast Sixth Street. Officials said he made a left turn in his pickup truck onto Northeast Sixth Street while traveling west in the east lanes.

Officials said the crossing lights were active and the crossing gates were lowered.

Soua’s crash happened about 1 p.m. Tuesday near Dixie Highway and Garfield Street when he tried to use his Jeep to go east on Garfield Street and cross the track as a train was traveling south.

The crossing gates were lowered and Soua maneuvered around them, witnesses told police.

Officials warn drivers to never attempt to beat a train across the tracks.
