Ah-Tha-Thi-Ki: In the 19th century, an ancient medicine man — known as Abiaca to the Indians, Sam Jones to the rest of Florida — refused to surrender to America’s military might. His leadership in the Second Seminole War (1835-1842) ensured an Indian presence in Florida to this day.
Not far from the spot where he is believed to be buried, the Seminole Tribe of Florida opened the Ah-Tha-Thi-Ki Museum to preserve the history and culture of an Indian nation the U.S. Army could not vanquish. Located in the Big Cypress Seminole Reservation, the $2 million museum presents exhibits, artifacts and photographs depicting native customs and ceremonies as well as a living Seminole village. Bonnet House: This 35-acre subtropical estate with ponds, lawns, swans and monkeys goes back to Broward’s earliest days. In 1893, Hugh Taylor Birch, a Chicago lawyer, bought what was to become Fort Lauderdale’s beach. His heirs added collections of Spode and Wedgwood china and German beer steins, an orchid house, a shell museum, the “island theater,” and an art deco bamboo bar, as well as innumerable paintings. Stranahan House: The oldest structure in Fort Lauderdale is now a museum that reflects the years when Indians canoed in from the Everglades, traded with Frank Stranahan and slept overnight on his house’s spacious porches. Stranahan built his first trading post in 1895, then replaced it with a two-story pine structure in 1901. The home/trading post has been restored and preserved as it was between 1913 and 1915. Cape Florida Lighthouse: At the southern tip of Key Biscayne stands the oldest lighthouse in Florida and the oldest structure on Florida’s southeast coast, built in 1825. In an 1836 Indian attack, the Seminoles set fire to its wooden door and ignited the beacon’s 225 gallons of oil. The keeper’s aide died in the attack, and the severely burned keeper hurled a keg of gunpowder into the fire, hoping to end his own suffering. Instead, the explosion attracted a rescue party, and he survived.
Reservations must be made to climb to the top of the lighthouse, the centerpiece of the Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Recreation Area. The cottage museum has tours, displays and a miniature theater. The park includes 11/4 miles of oceanfront beach, picnic pavilions, fishing on Biscayne Bay and a cafe. Coral Castle: In Latvia in 1912, stonemason Ed Leedskalnin was jilted on his wedding day. To ease the pain of a broken heart, Ed, a tiny man weighing 100 pounds, carved more than 2 million pounds of oolitic limestone to create a walled palace. He furnished it with stone rocking chairs, coffee tables, replicas of moons and the planet Mars, a 9-ton gate and more. Miccosukee Indian Village and Culture Center: After Florida’s three Indian wars ended in the 1850s, many Miccosukees stayed in the Everglades and the Big Cypress Swamp. The Miccosukee Indian Village and Culture Center west of Miami is a reminder of how the Indians lived before the Tamiami Trail (U.S. 41) cut through their lands in the 1920s.
Guided tours take visitors through the village and cooking and sleeping chickees, where families in tribal dress demonstrate food preparation and traditional crafts. Vizcaya Museum and Gardens: In 1916, International Harvester magnate James Deering built an Italian Renaissance villa set in a lush tropical hammock at a cost of $22 million. He named it Vizcaya — a corruption of the word Biscayne — after the Biscayne Bay waters that splashed against his palace. The 72-room museum is set amid 10 acres of formal gardens on Biscayne Bay. The rooms are decorated with ancient tapestries, carpets and artworks. Open daily except Christmas.
