When he was a senior, Bates won the 1983 South Carolina State Wrestling Champion and was voted Most Outstanding Wrestler.
Bates later joined Anderson University for his college education. He later transferred to Carson Newman University.

The couple had not planned to have any children until they had been married for five years. However, Kelly was pregnant only a few months after getting married, and the couple welcomed their first child, Zachary Gilvin on December 30, 1988.
