High school students from Broward and Palm Beach counties were recognized on Thursday by the Sun-Sentinel for their accomplishments as members of their campus newspaper staffs.
The Sun-Sentinel honored students, schools and newspapers in its 1992 High School Journalism Awards ceremony at the Boca Raton Marriott Crocker Center hotel in Boca Raton.
Jodie Needle of Piper High School in Sunrise won the $4,000 Sun-Sentinel Journalism/Advertising scholarship.
“I am so shocked,” Needle said through tears. She will attend the University of Florida and plans a career at a daily newspaper. “There’s a need to express your opinions as well as the community’s opinions. We need to inform the public about things that are affecting them,” she said.
Other students were selected by either their journalism advisers or classmates, or both, as “most valuable” members of their newspaper staffs.
Before the ceremonies on Thursday night, the Sun-Sentinel was awarded a media citation by the Journalism Education Association for its contributions to high school journalism.
