James Denton was born Jamie Thomas Denton Jr. on 20 January 1963 and is 59 years old. He was born in Nashville, Tennessee to his father J.T. Denton (1930–1993), a dentist who served in the military, and his mother Mary Jean Woolslair Denton, who died of breast cancer in 2002. 

James was raised nearby Goodlettsville. He enrolled at the where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, majored in television/journalism, and earned a degree in advertisement. He is of American nationality and belongs to the white ethnicity.
