He led only one lap and became the Grand National Series’ 100th different driver to win.

The following weekend, leaders Jeff Green and Michael Waltrip collided on the final lap of the North Carolina Motor Speedway race. He won the Sam’s Club 200 by leading the final two laps. With 772 points, he finished sixth in the final behind Champion Greg Biffle. In 2003, Greg would become Jamie’s rookie rival.

On September 10, 2018, he announced that he will not be returning to Chip Ganassi Racing in 2019. Before taking on a leadership role with the team, he was offered a contract by GCR to drive in the 2019 Daytona 500. He’d eventually retire from full-time Cup Series racing and sign a deal with Fox Sports. He would appear on Fos Sport’s weekday and race day NASCAR programs in addition to his leadership role with Ganassi.

In January 2019, Chip Ganassi Racing announced a partnership with Spire Motorsports to field the No. 40 car for Jamie at the Daytona 500. He finished 22nd after leading a few laps. He started 19th and finished 8th in only his second Daytona 500 Top 10 finish.
