JUPITER BOY DROWNS IN PUERTO RICAN SURF

Palm Beach County

A 13-year-old Jupiter boy drowned while surfing off Puerto Rico’s west coast.

Ryan Johnson drowned off the town of Isabela early Friday, police agent Felix Adames said. The area is popular among surfers.

Ryan had been surfing competitively for a year and three weeks ago won a trophy as a champion in his age group in a Palm Beach County contest.

The St. Clare Catholic School sixth-grader and his father arrived in Isabela late Thursday and were staying in a cabana by the beach. They went surfing at 6 a.m. Friday, but the youth soon disappeared in the waves. His body was found at 7:15 a.m. Authorities said he apparently hit a rock.
