There’s not a lot of “let’s do it for Wayne” spirit on the field.
“Being the ages (5-8) they’re not up on certain things, like Wayne,” coach Bert Collett says.
Wee Wayniacs are 2-2 in the Lake Lytal Lassie League in West Palm Beach. There’s one other team in the league, Ruth’s Cleaning Service.
“We lost one, then won one, then lost one, then won one,” Coach Bert says.
“The parents are more into the fact that it’s Wayne Newton’s team,” he says. It’s become kind of prestigious around Lake Lytal. “Your daughter’s really on Wayne’s team?”
Does the coach dig Wayne’s act? “After ‘the change,”‘ he says. “I remember seeing him on Lucy when he was a kid. He’s really changed a lot.”
The kids? “They just wanna play ball.”
