Mike joined the Chicago Cubs during the 1973 Draft in the 8th round. During his baseball career, he played for the San Francisco Giants from 1983 to 1989, the Philadelphia Phillies in 1982, and Chicago Cubs from 1976 to 1981. Furthermore, in December 1982 he was traded to the San Francisco Giants with Charlie Penigar for reliever Al Holland and Joe Morgan.
In the 1993 National League pennant, the Philadelphia Phillies won. In 1983, Mike joined the San Francisco Giants, and his memorable moment was in 1986 when he posted a record of 20–9 with a 3.05 ERA for the team. He completed the third position behind Fernando Valenzuela and Mike Scott at the NL Cy Young Award. Additionally, he was chosen for the National League All-Star.
For his spirit and leadership in 1985 and 1986, he received the Willie Mac Award. During his postseason game, he appeared in Game 4 of the 1987 National League Championship Series.
