A suspicious briefcase, with handcuffs attached to the handle and an on/off switch on the side, led to a bomb scare Saturday afternoon at a Plantation apartment complex.
Turns out, it was just a fancy briefcase and not an explosive device, according to the Plantation Police Department.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office bomb squad was called about 4:30 p.m. to investigate the plastic briefcase found in a stairwell at the Alexan Solero apartments, at 13500 NW 3rd Street, according to police.
A maintenance man discovered the strange looking case and moved it to the apartment center parking lot. A few hours later, the bomb squad determined that the briefcase was not a threat.
The on/off switch operated a light inside the briefcase. The handcuffs might have been a security feature for someone using the briefcase to transport valuable items, but police aren’t sure who it belonged to or why it was in the stairwell, Plantation Police Det. Robert Rettig said.
During the investigation, people were evacuated from the pool area near the parking lot, but residents were allowed to stay in their apartments during the investigation.
“It was deemed suspicious,” Rettig said about the briefcase. “You tend to err on the side of caution.
