‘RED WING’ FLEW IN ’07; ARTIE SHAW ON TAPE

Q.

I have been trying to find a song titled Red Wing. I think it was from the ’20s. I have no idea who recorded it. – Eileen Palmer, Deerfield Beach

A.

Red Wing was written way back in 1907 by Kerry Mills (music) and Thurland Chattaway (words). It has been recorded by several bands, most notably by Sam Donahue and his Orchestra (Capitol #472) and Jack Teagarden (Columbia #35450); also by Freddie “Schnicklefritz” Fisher (Decca #1929). All of these original recordings (78 rpm) are available at Records Revisited, 34 W. 33rd St., New York 1000l; 1-212-695-7155.

Q.

I have been trying to find a recording of a harmonica player who accompanied a dancer by the name of Paul Draper. His first name was Larry, but I can’t recall his last name. They were onstage in the 1940s. My sister-in-law who lives in Coconut Creek sent me your article. – Rose Weisman, Houston, Texas

A.

The harmonica player was the legendary Larry Adler, who appeared with dancer Paul Draper in various theaters in the United States and Europe; also toured with Draper in Israel and South Korea. I was unable to ascertain if he ever made any recordings with Draper. Blacklisted by anti-Communist witchhunters in the late ’40s, Adler lived mostly in London, England, where he made a 90-minute video last year, tracing his career from the Jazz Age to the verge of his 80th birthday. The film title is Sound Stuff: Larry – My Life of Music. Q.

Q.

I recently heard a recording of Me and My Shadow on WDBF that I would like to get. It was a duet of Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis on the Reprise Collection on CD. Can I get this recording on standard tape? I am also interested in the same tune as either originally done by Ted Lewis or possibly as recorded by Jackie Gleason. – Sam Sherdell, Boca Raton

A.

I don’t believe that the duet by Sinatra and Sammy Davis is available on a cassette. However, a tape could be made from the CD if you know someone who has a CD player and tape recorder. As to the original recording by Ted Lewis, it is available on tape at Mr. Nostalgia in Tamarac previously mentioned in this column. The phone number is 1-305-726-5420.
