Hatch graduated from Middletown High School in 1979. He went on to join the Florida Institute of Technology where he majored in Marine Biology and Oceanography before finally enlisting in the Army in 1980.

Rhode Island Senator John Chafee appointed him to the United States Military Academy at West Point. Hatch served for five years until 1985 when he was honorably discharged.

His first station was at t Fort Bliss, Texas, and Fort Stewart, Georgia, before attending USMAPS in Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, and the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York.

He left West Port for New York City where Hatch worked for owners of Studio 54; Ian Schrager and Steve Rubel at the Palladium. Hatch later graduated from National-Louis University with a bachelor’s degree in Management/Applied Behavioral Sciences.

He moved to Newport, Rhode Island where he attended Rhode Island’s Providence College, pursuing a master’s degree in Education and Counseling.

Richard Hatch Survivor

Hatch competed in the first edition of the Survivor series: Survivor: Borneo. He began the game on the Tagi tribe, where he assembled a voting alliance with former Navy SEAL Rudy Boesch, Sue Hawk, and Kelly Wiglesworth.

Hatch was the fisherman of his tribe, a role he got into to ensure that he would be too valuable to vote off. Tangi was eventually merged with the Pagong tribe to a new tribe called Rattana.

He was seen as arrogant in the final tribal council. He was both praised and vilified for his leadership of the voting alliance. Hatch was compared to a snake by Hawk.

Hatch eventually became the Sole Survivor in a 4–3 vote, earning the votes of Boesch, Hawk, Kenniff, and Greg Buis.

Survivor: All-Stars

During Survivor: All-Stars, Hatch was a member of the Mogo Mogo tribe. He approached the season with a carefree attitude knowing there were secret pre-game alliances against him and a conspiracy to eliminate previous Survivor winners.

He spent most of his time fishing for sport, being the entertainer, and lounging around camp. Hatch was eventually eliminated from the tribe after they lost immunity.

It was revealed in 2010 that Hatch was considered a strong candidate to return for the 20th season, Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains, as a villain. He was, however, unable to return because prosecutors refused to permit him.
