Services Thursday for teen who died in Weston crash

A 13-year-old boy who was struck by a car in Weston has died from his injuries, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said.

Cody Cohen, a seventh-grader at Tequesta Trace Middle School, will be buried Thursday after his funeral.

The teen, who authorities originally said was 14, was hit by a Nissan Altima at 2:53 p.m. Sunday.

He had life-threatening injuries when he was flown to Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, where he died Tuesday, Broward Sheriff’s spokeswoman Gina Carter said.

The collision happened at the intersection of Indian Trace and Saddle Club Road, where Cody and two other children were crossing, Carter said.

Witnesses said the children seemed distracted and might not have realized that westbound traffic on Saddle Club Road — which had a green light and included the Nissan — was approaching, according to the sheriff’s office.

Driver Solcireet Sahie Santiso-Lopez, 35, of Weston, tried to stop the Nissan but could not, the agency said.

She stayed at the scene, is not currently facing charges and has cooperated with the investigation, which is continuing, Carter said.

Cody was the son of Dr. Michael Cohen and Stacey Cohen of Weston. Kurt Cohen, 15, also survives his brother.

Relatives traveled from around the country to be at the boy’s bedside before he died, family members said.

“Our hearts are broken with the loss of our beautiful nephew, Cody,” said his maternal aunt, Lisa Wainer, of New York. “His infectious smile and laugh will always be with us.”

Cody liked to create humorous videos and put them on the musical.ly social network.

A paternal aunt, Adrianna Cohen, also of New York, remembered Cody’s confident sense of style, and how he once bought two pairs of Converse sneakers — one orange, the other purple — and would wear a shoe from each.

“The common thread you hear when a child dies is there are no words,” Cohen said. “There are none. The hole is so large, it can’t be filled.”

A crisis team was at Tequesta Trace Middle School on Wednesday and will be available to counsel students and faculty for as long as needed, the school district said.

The child’s funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Temple Dor Dorim, 2360 Glades Circle, Weston. Burial will be private.
