Celebrate Black Teachers and Students
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
The students in my school consist predominantly of African American students from Oak Park and Detroit, Michigan areas. Our school is a Title I school and 100% receive free lunches. The students, I work with struggle with social, emotional, and behaviors issues. Multiple students have experiences significate trauma and/or abuse. Some students have experience or witnessed gun violence, loss of a family member due to violence or substance use.
This project with help give my students an escape in a safe and secure place within the school.
Our sensory room has many tactile/movement tools and visual stimulation to suit some student’s needs. This project is to tie everything in and boost students’ imagination with a science/ space themed sensory room. The space theme will increase students’ interest in science. They will be able to learn about our solar system while being able to explore through their sensory needs. There is a rug with the solar system on it. Stress ball that resembles each planet. Posters and tapestries to reduce external lights that follow the theme. A lamp that resembles the moon for more sensory stimulation. We even have a desk top orbiter that resembles how the planets move.
