A suspect in the killing of a Pompano Beach man turned himself in to police late Saturday after tips from neighbors and fingerprints at the scene linked him to the slaying, police said.
Darrin Hines, 27, of Pompano Beach, faces murder and other charges in the shooting death of Jeffery Johnson, 27. Police say they are also searching for Tracy Hemphill, 26, of Pompano Beach, in connection with the slaying.
Hines was in Broward County Jail without bail on Sunday evening.
Johnson was shot twice in the head about 4 a.m. by intruders in his home in the 2300 block of Northwest Sixth Street. Police said the motive appeared to be robbery, although nothing was taken.
“They saw him with a large sum of money,” said Sandra King, public information officer for the Pompano Beach police. “They decided to take it from him.”
Before the shooting, the pair had borrowed Johnson’s car and apparently used his keys to enter the house. They bound his mother with duct tape in one room and then shot Johnson when he came to investigate, King said.
Neighbors and others called police on Friday and Saturday offering tips on the killing, many giving the names of Hines and Hemphill, King said.
“They kept giving us the same two names,” she said. “We got tremendous cooperation from the community.”
The suspects’ fingerprints were taken from the duct tape used in the crime, King said.
Hines is being held on a charge of first-degree murder, attempted burglary with a firearm, kidnapping, use of a firearm during the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and home-invasion robbery.
Hemphill would face similar charges when arrested, King said.
