There were many outstanding performances during the 1996 high school track season. As many as there may have been, this year fell short of the best set over the six previous years since 1990.
Only four girl events were topped this year. Seilala Sua of St. Thomas had record setting performances in the shot put (49-5 1/2) and the discus (185-7), while winning state titles in each event. Elaine Gaynor of Boyd Anderson had a top time of 2:14.71 in the 800 meter run to win a state title. Rashiela Ruddock of Coral Springs finished second at the state meet in the 300 hurdles with a time of 42.97.
One the of record breakers was Nichole Irving of Nova in 1991. She is the only girl in Broward County to go over 20 feet in the long jump with a leap of 20-2(TM).
Despite an off year during the boys season where no time or distance events were bested, there where state titles won Boyd Anderson in 4×100 relay; St. Thomas in the 4×100 relay and high jump and Hallandale in the discus.
