What’s Here:
The online archive contains the text
of stories back to January 1, 1985. Most news stories
that have appeared in the paper are in the archives.

What’s Not Here:
      Photos, horoscopes, most financial
and sports tables, advertising and "advertorial" products
are not available online.

Search Fees:
Conducting a search and viewing headlines
and lead paragraphs is free. You will only pay to read the
complete text of an article by clicking on "Purchase the Article"
and then entering credit card information. Purchased articles
are delivered through your web browser. They are not sent via e-mail.

      Pricing
is: $1.95 per article.

      If you
leave a story and re-enter it later, you will not be charged
twice as long as you do not quit and relaunch your browser.

Looking for an obituary?

The archives include each day’s list
of death notices and paid obituaries. If you search for an individual
by name seeking an obituary, the article you receive is likely to include
all deaths and obituaries for that day. Some notices list only
name, age and date of death. These listings, marked with an asterisk,
are courtesy listings. Where the family placed a paid obituary, there
will be more information. When searching, you cannot tell in advance
whether you will find a brief courtesy listing or a more extended paid
obituary.  Please note: Due to technology problems, we
are missing obituaries since Oct. 16. We hope to add these to the database
by the end of November.

Enter your search terms

  • Use the Boolean operators "and"
and "or" to refine your search, and separate your terms
with parentheses to prevent ambiguity. For example:
Clinton and (defense or military or pentagon or armed forces)
  • You can also search for specific sources,
dates and sections by typing that information: Associated Press
    and July 10 and business
  • Try several searches, then evaluate
the results, before retrieving the full text of articles.

Specify how you would like articles
sorted
      Articles are normally listed
in reverse chronological order, or latest first. You can also choose
to list articles in chronological order, or oldest first.

      The archives
software also offers two types of relevance ranking. Frequency ranking
list articles in order of the number of search words they contain. Relevance
ranking starts with frequency, then uses a dictionary to weight search
words. Less common words are ranked higher.

Decide how many results you would
like
      The archive software returns
the first 25 articles in reverse chronological order (from newest to
oldest). However, you can specify more articles — 50 or 100 — using
the dialogue box.

Select a year to search, or search
the entire archive
You may want to find articles
from one specific year, or search the entire archive.

search techniques.
