At the age of 16, he began contributing frequently on crossword puzzles to Dell publications. He graduated in 1974 from Indiana University and became the only person to get a college degree in enigmatology i.e. the study of puzzles. His thesis was about the history of American word puzzles, he got his thesis by creating his curriculum via the Individualized Major Program at Indiana University.
He made an on-air quiz every week to one contestant and gave a challenge to listeners at home. The winner would play the puzzle on the air with Will and Lulu Garcia Navarro as the host. Additionally, the winner got The New York Times Sunday Crossword Puzzles, Volume 43, from St. Martin’s Press.
