Wings Plus deserves an A-plus for its meaty, delicious Buffalo-style chicken wings.
The chicken wings are well fried, but not greasy, and the Buffalo-style sauce is piquant and nicely balanced with seasonings. Wings are $3.05 for an order of 10 wings and $4.25 for a large order with 16 wings.
Likewise the garlic wings, $3.25 for 10, $4.40 for 16, are meaty and loaded with garlic. These are not for the faint of heart.
But the restaurant, with one location in western Fort Lauderdale and another in Coral Springs, isn’t named Wings Plus without good reason.
Curlicue fries, $1.50, is a hefty order of greaseless, tasty fries. Fried mushrooms, $1.85, are a little bready for my tastes, but are hot and moist on the inside.
Skip the chicken sandwich, $3.45, which comes with a pickle and potato chips. The chicken was made from a frozen patty, heavily breaded and very dry. The shredded, dull lettuce and small, flavorless tomato slice added nothing to the sandwich.
Other offerings include chef’s salad, $3.50; tuna salad plate, $2.95; fried clams with chips, $3.15. Heroes include roast beef, $3.75; steak and cheese, $4.15; ham and cheese, $3.15; turkey, $3.35; tuna, $3.20. Hamburgers are $2.35, or $2.50 with cheese; fish filet, $2.85; hot dogs, $1.75.
Both the Fort Lauderdale and the Coral Springs locations are your basic wings restaurants. The Coral Springs location is bright and cheerful with lots of light wood and plants; the dining room is sectioned off to create several smaller dining areas. The Fort Lauderdale restaurant also has a counter with stools positioned in front of the kitchen.
Both restaurants are quiet and homey and attract a number of regulars. At the Coral Springs location, several customers simply said the word “Wings” to the waitress behind the counter and then seated themselves.
At both locations, service is friendly and efficient. At the Coral Springs restaurant, we found Christina an especially nice waitress.
